SMTP Servers That Are Unsuitable for Mail Forwarding

The following SMTP servers have been found to be unsuitable for successful mail forwarding. You can still forward mail to and from these services; however, you should use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) rather than the servers listed here.

smtp.aol.com AOL's SMTP server will reject most mail with an error that causes Mail Forward to continually retry the operation without success. Even if you are successful, AOL may freeze your account if they determine that you are overusing their SMTP server (our test account was frozen for less than 100 messages).

Solution: Use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). AOL is not your ISP unless you use dial-up directly to an AOL telephone number.

smtp.gmail.com
smtp.googlemail.com
Because of a peculiarity in the way the Gmail system operates, if you use the Gmail SMTP server (smtp.gmail.com) to forward mail to a Gmail account, the From address will be changed to your Gmail account address. Also, all of your forwarded mail will not be transferred to the Inbox, but to the Sent Mail folder. These are "features" of the Gmail SMTP server, and are not failures or limitations of Mail Forward.

Solution: If you are forwarding mail to a Gmail account, use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you are forwarding mail to a non-Gmail account, you can use this server.

smtp.mac.com Apple has placed restrictions on the .mac SMTP server (smtp.mac.com) so that it can not be used to forward mail.

Solution: Use the SMTP server provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).
